A sad commentary of our generation is a lack of trusting faith in the marvelous promises of God. Without a trusting and obedient faith in the High and Holy – life becomes a meaningless and unhappy conclusion. The wise king Solomon was acquainted with trusting God’s blessings. The monarch had invested self in a matter apart from God and would be advised to understand the results of his experiences: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Eccl. 12:13).
We have a clear choice in life. We can trust our Creator and live or, we can trust our curiosity with the company of Satan and lose our eternal life. The old commentator Matthew Henry said: “Every man is the servant of the master to whose commands he yields himself; whether it be the sinful dispositions of his heart, in actions which lead to death, or the new and spiritual obedience implanted by regeneration.” The Holy Spirit speaking through the apostle Paul said: “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16).
Many years ago before modern travel a man traveling west was hopelessly lost until discovered by another traveler heading east. The fellow traveler encouraged the frustrated wayfarer to take a copy of his map along with a compass and to trust in the two items! What was the west bound traveler trusting to arrive at his destination? He may have trusted in his instincts. He may have travelled the route previously and had some experience. Whatever this man trusted had failed him! He needed to have a proper trust in the tools to lead him to his destination. Instead of trusting our instincts, feelings and experiences apart from God, let us be equipped with a confident trust in the Lord! When the world tempts you to sin and walk in the mire of filth and ruin – trust God (Titus 2:11-13)!
- When Satan attempts to convince you that your attendance and the church are of no importance – trust God (Hebrews 10:23-25)!
- When your classmates or peer group sells you on the idea that gospel obedience is for wimps – trust God (Mark 16:16)!
- When family members encourage you to remain in adultery because of the children – trust God (Matthew 19:3-9; Hebrews 13:4)!
- When Christians give up or fidelity to Jesus because of materialism – trust God (1 Corinthians 15:58; Matthew 6:33)!
- When your family renounces you because of your faith – keep on trusting God (Matthew 10:32-33-39)!
- When a love one dies and life seems so unfair and miserable, look up and trust God (John 11:25)!
“Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.” (Psalms 4:5)
